"Mass media that are funded from outside of Russia and disseminate undesirable information can cease to exist in Russia at all"
The Russian parliament (State Duma) decided to develop legal measures for media financed from outside of Russia and placing undesirable content in the Russian Federation. These measures are conceived as a mirror response to the actions of the US in relation to the Russian television channel RT and the news agency Sputnik.
State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that dozens of US media and online platforms operate on the territory of Russia, which "interfere in Russia's internal affairs." According to the speaker, this refers to "undisguised interference" on the part of the media, which "are funded directly or indirectly by the US Government."
In turn, the vice-speaker of the State Duma Peter Tolstoy explained that amendments to the law on foreign agents in Russia will oblige foreign media, recognized as foreign agents, to publish information about this on their pages in social networks.
Recall, it all started with the fact that the US began pressure on the US branch of the RT television company and Sputnik news agency from Russia. In particular, from the television channel, the US Justice Department demanded that the channel must register as a "foreign agent". In response, the State Duma of Russia decided to develop measures in relation to US media in Russia.
