"Deputies propose to "minimize the number of citizens with stable political and legal ties to foreign states""
A bill has been submitted to the State Duma of the Russian Federation, proposing to double the tax rate on income, transport, and property for citizens born in Russia but holding citizenship in other countries, with the exception of citizens of Belarus, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia.
According to the explanatory note, the goal of the bill is to reduce the number of citizens with dual citizenship who have strong legal and political ties to foreign states. The authors of the document believe that this will help strengthen legitimate authority in Russia.
It is also suggested that increasing the tax rate for those who do not renounce citizenship of unfriendly countries could boost state budget revenues.
It is noted that these changes will not affect citizens who have lost economic ties with Russia and are tax residents of other countries.
Previously, the Russian government gave a negative review of the bill, pointing out that tax legislation should not be discriminatory and cannot consider citizenship as a factor for establishing differentiated rates.
