"It is proposed to give Russian citizenship to foreigners without abandoning existing citizenship"
A draft law has been submitted to the State Duma of Russia that simplifies the procedure for obtaining citizenship for a number of categories of citizens. The document eliminates the need to renounce existing citizenship for foreigners who wish to obtain Russian citizenship.
The initiative proposes to amend the current law, according to which a foreigner can apply for Russian citizenship if he/she has lived in Russia for more than 5 years. The draft law proposes to establish categories that will be exempted from the need to comply with this period, as well as from the obligation to have a legal source of livelihood.
Citizens of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Ukraine fall into these categories. It is also proposed to include foreigners or stateless persons if they have at least one Russian parent living in the Russian Federation.
