The State Duma of the Russian Federation has approved in the second and third readings a law that significantly expands the list of grounds for the loss of acquired Russian citizenship. The adopted changes give the authorities a broader set of tools to respond to legal violations by those who have obtained Russian citizenship but fail to show proper respect for the country and its norms.
According to Vyacheslav Volodin, the adopted law will also serve as a deterrent to those who see citizenship as merely a way to access social benefits and privileges without showing respect for the state or a willingness to integrate into society. He emphasized that the decision to adopt the law was supported by all parliamentary factions and that the initiative resonated with the public.
Deputy Chair of the State Duma Irina Yarovaya stated that the new law sends a clear message: acquiring citizenship entails loyalty and fulfilling obligations to the country. In her words, the abandonment of these obligations is regarded not only as a legal violation but also as a moral betrayal, and in such cases, the state has the right to respond with the harshest measure—the termination of citizenship.
Earlier, it was reported that the State Duma had adopted amendments expanding the list of grounds for revoking citizenship. The draft law introduces more than 20 new reasons for the loss of acquired citizenship.
